Pixar Storytelling Tip #11

Welcome to my series on Pixar’s now-famous 22 Rules of Storytelling. I don’t religiously follow all of these like they’re story commandments, but I do happen to agree with many of them. I thought it might be fun to examine why and explain what each means to me. You can start at the beginning here.

This is a weird tip. I understand that it is supposed to be motivational. A call to action. Writers write. But for a company like Pixar, it’s a strange mantra.

I will say that writing things down is an easy way to work out all the kinks of a story. You may think you have it all figured in your head, but try putting all the pieces down and seeing if they all fit. It’s likely you’ll find that your puzzle is missing pieces. Find them.
