Pixar Storytelling Tip #9

Welcome to my series on Pixar’s now-famous 22 Rules of Storytelling. I don’t religiously follow all of these like they’re story commandments, but I do happen to agree with many of them. I thought it might be fun to examine why and explain what each means to me. You can start at the beginning here.

I’ve actually done this before, and it’s pretty self-explanatory.

I was looking for the perfect transition from one scene to another, but I kept nixing my ideas before they would come because I didn’t like them. It left me stuck for a while. Finally, I decided to relent and entertain other scenarios, even if I didn’t like them. Those didn’t get used, but others came out of it.

This is just one trick of many to inspire yourself. Experiment. All authors must learn what works for them and hone their craft.
